McMillan: McMillan

[mək'mɪlən], Edwin Mattison, amerikanischer Physiker, * Redondo Beach (Calif.) 18. 9. 1907, ✝ El Cerrito (Calif.) 7. 9. 1991; Professor in Berkeley; 1958-73 Direktor des dortigen »Lawrence Radiation Laboratory«; entdeckte 1940 die ersten Transurane: mit P. H. Abelson das Neptunium und mit G. T. Seaborg das Plutonium. Unabhängig von W. J. Weksler entwickelte McMillan das Prinzip des Synchrotrons. Für die Entdeckung der neuen chemischen Elemente erhielt er 1951 (mit Seaborg) den Nobelpreis für Chemie.
